The provider had failed to ensure government guidelines for working safely in care homes during the COVID-19 pandemic were implemented and adhered to. Staff were not always provided with clear guidance to support people who presented with behaviours that challenged. The governance systems used by the provider had not always identified areas requiring action or improvement. Relatives we spoke with told us they were confident their relation was supported by kind and caring staff. This inspection was carried out by two inspectors and an Expert by Experience. An Expert by Experience is a person who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of care service. One of the leading nursing homes in Chesterfield, you’ll find that Ashcroft Care Home has a very welcoming atmosphere. We are a short drive from the centre of Chesterfield and close to public transport, making us easily accessible for visitors to pop-in for a chat. Whether you need a break or want to visit us to convalesce after time in hospital, our short-stay residents all receive a high level of personalised care and support. We have recently been able to open EAC Advice, a new 'housing options' advice service for older people.
The last rating for this service was inadequate The provider completed an action plan after the last inspection to show what they would do and by when to improve. There was a positive person-centred approach to the delivery of people's care. This was demonstrated by the staff’s understanding of the people they were supporting.

The Care Quality Commission is the official regulator for the care sector. They inspect care homes and care services to make sure they are safe, caring, effective, responsive and well-led. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement.
The service had a manager who had applied to be registered with the Care Quality Commission. Registered managers and providers are legally responsible for how the service is run and for the quality and safety of the care provided. This purpose built care home provides nursing and social care for both the frail elderly and people living with dementia. I worked my way up from being a Care Assistant in a mental health hospital and an Administrator to a Home Manager. A few highlights that I am particularly proud of were setting up the first English renal dialysis company with Sheffield PCT. I was also involved in creating a night roving service in Hull.
And there is still a rating of inadequate for any key question or overall rating, we will take action in line with our enforcement procedures. This will mean we will begin the process of preventing the provider from operating this service. This will usually lead to cancellation of their registration or to varying the conditions the registration. The overall rating for this service is ‘Inadequate’ and the service is therefore in ‘special measures’. This means we will keep the service under review and, if we do not propose to cancel the provider’s registration, we will re-inspect within 6 months to check for significant improvements. We have identified breaches in relation to safety, staffing, safeguarding and governance at this inspection.
